Here’s Some Counsel regarding Ken Mehlman of Kohlberg, Kravis, Roberts & Co

February 24th, 2010

When Henry Kravis and his partner George Roberts set up Kohlberg, Kravis, Roberts & Co (KKR) in the mid-seventies with some support from the First Chicago Corporation, the firm’s specialization was in highly leveraged transactions. However, hoping to make the businesses in their portfolio have less ecological impact, they have established an exceptional green project which has transformed the way businesses and environmental groups work. Environmentally aware business procedures became a hot topic last year when Kohlberg, Kravis, Roberts & Co’s Henry Kravis and the non-profit environmental advocacy group Environmental Defense Fund (EDF) joined forces. Their mission is to encourage their affiliated companies to fight against procedures which may harm the environment such as deforestation as well as any exorbitant consumption of water resources. In order to attain this, they deploy eco-efficiency which calls for practical techniques such as using clean energy, reducing the intensity of materials, and improving fuel economy through vehicle fleet maintenance. Although the program was an enormous success, staff just did not understand how incredible the results truly were until Ken Mehlman, the head of the program and global public affairs, reviewed the first year’s profits. Ken observed that practicing eco-efficiency wasn’t solely reducing their environmental impact, but it was also helping to save business concerns a great deal of money. Just about all of the businesses linked with Kohlberg, Kravis, Roberts & Co and Ken Mehlman now are actively taking part in eco-efficiency. Still, with a current portfolio estimated at 86,000,000,000 USD, you can be sure this was no easy feat.

The initial Green Portfolio project has now broadened to encompass new opportunities. The Climate Corps Program founded by the Environmental Defense Fund is an example of this, it campaigns for eco-efficient principles to MBA interns.

More recently, Ken Mehlman has been in close collaboration with KKR to create metrics and analytic tools that business organizations can use to evaluate various resources. These products allow management to assess their progress and discover any problem areas.

Henry Kravis, the KKC, and the Environmental Defense Fund have encouraged all sorts of businesses to reduce their ecological impact. These innovations have made going green simpler for companies in every industry and illustrated that running a profitable business need not entail the hefty price of damaging the environment.
