HTML for Complete Beginners

April 17th, 2009

HTML stands for Hyper Text Markup Language and is the computer
language that most of the Internet is written in.

HTML is made up of tags and sets of tags, a set being two tags
that are linked: a start tag and an end tag. HTML is a bit like
a person, the head comes first, then the body.

As I’ve just mentioned the very first main tag of every single
HTML document is usually the HTML tag, which is a start tag and
is written as . Accompanying it will be the very last tag
of the document, the end tag, . Notice the / this means
it is an end tag. Every start tag must have an end tag. Start
tags begin a section of code and end tags finish it. I say the
very first “main” tag as there can be a tag before it, the
DOCTYPE tag. This tag gives the browser information about what
type of HTML is being used.

The head section begins with the tag and ends with the
tag. It has information about the page itself and
consists of the page title, the meta tags (more on those in a
minute), and the code for any page transitions you may have.

The page title is self-explanatory and is written as <br /> Your page title

The meta tags, particularly the to be used to tell the programs that the search engines send out
(otherwise known as search engine spiders or bots), which
keywords to index your website for. For example my personal
homepage, http://www.moynem.freeserve.co.uk (first created when
I knew nothing about HTML apart from what it was and what it
stood for)is called “M Moyne’s home page and thus has the meta
tag:

There is also a meta description tag which used to tell the
search engines how to describe the website on their results
pages, now I’ve seen them use the first few lines of text for
their description.

The next of the main tags is the body tag, which is written as
and respectively. It contains the main part of
your HTML code. On my personal homepage it starts off with the
code for the background. In this case it is a JPEG image. You
can put almost anything in the body section, navigation bars,
page banners, tables, images, horizontal lines, hyperlinks and
so on. However all of the things that I have just mentioned
cannot go anywhere else except the body section.

Let’s look at the code for some simple things.

Headings: Heading 1 is

Heading 2 is

Heading 3 is

and so on.

Paragraphs begin with

and end with

A 100 * 200 image with a description is: width="100" height="200" alt="my image"
longdesc="myfirstimage.html">

That’s enough for a simple web page.

How To Write Conversationally And Easily Connect With Your Readers

April 14th, 2009

We live in a nano-second world. Today’s readers, harried and exhausted just don’t have time to linger, quietly absorbing the glorious intricacies the English language.

Nope. Too busy. Way too tired.

This means everything you write has to appeal to the fast paced, raised on Sesame Street, weaned on MTV generation.

And as a writer, you need to deal with this reality.

But how do you do this?

Easy. Write conversationally.

Now, when you’re speaking with another person, they have the benefit of watching your nonverbal communication. You wave your arms, roll your eyes, intone your voice… all these nonverbal cues clarify the message you’re trying to convey.

Unfortunately, written words don’t transmit nonverbal cues very easily.

That’s why you must write conversationally while using absolutely every tool we can muster to make up for the lack of nonverbal communication.

Here are three of these tools:

First, as a writer, you must “word paint” your message and create as similar a message in your reader’s mind as possible. This means that you must choose ultra-specific words, particularly verbs. Of course, using a few passive verbs (such as is/was/had/etc.) is inevitable.

However, whenever possible, eliminate them and replace them with a vibrant/active/visual verb. This means that a sentence such as “You are greeted” can easily transform to “Larry greets (active verb) you the minute you step in the door.”

Second, you must also use ultra-specific language.

Readers cannot hear your tone of voice. They cannot observe gestures. This means that EVERY word you choose MUST carry its weight and propel your message forward.

Here’s an example of what I’m talking about. What do you visualize when you read this sentence?

“I drive a car.”

Weak sentence, eh? We’ve probably got two very different pictures in our mind. Here’s a better sentence:

I drive a red car.

Closer but I’d venture to guess that our pictures are still very different.

How’s this?

I drive a cherry red 2005 Porsche 911 Turbo S. Coupe with an incredible 3.6 L. Turbo engine.

OK. Now we’re probably “seeing” the same car PLUS you can infer a number of my personality traits based on this car I drive.

How would your opinion change if I told you I really drive a ‘93 earth friendly three-cylinder Geo Metro hatch back?

I don’t drive either of these cars, but by now I’m sure you’re able to see how word choice can influence your reader’s opinion of your message.

Lastly, you’ve probably heard the writer’s mantra, “show, don’t tell”.

This sentence puzzled me for far to long. It’s actually a very easy concept to understand.

Suppose you came across this line, “The food is cold.”

This sentence doesn’t draw a “word picture.” In fact, at this point, you’re probably not even sure if “cold food” is a good or bad thing.

Here’s a better phrase: Light dances on little ice crystals as the waiter carries your own little slice of heaven.

Or perhaps instead of saying, “The food is hot,” write “Fragrant steam drifts upwards as…” well, I’m sure you get the idea.

So yes. Write conversationally, but choose ultra specific words.

This means you tighten your verbs. You won’t get rid of every passive verb, and that’s fine. However, you must pull every weapon out of your arsenal to make your reader see, taste, smell, hear, and feel this world you’re creating.

Paint vivid word pictures and you’ll connect with your readership like you never have before.

Let Go My Ego– Part 3

April 14th, 2009

Avoid Being a Speaker.

A “speaker” creates a certain image and expectation. People have preconceived ideas. They have certain expectations.

Being a “speaker” also creates pressure. Our minds catalog the speakers we’ve heard in the past and we compare ourselves. We begin to feel inadequate.

Instead, think of yourself as a resource, or teacher, or friend. You’re simply sharing information with a particular purpose. Are you wanting to motivate? Captivate? Infuriate? Activate? Pontificate?

Once you know what you want the outcome of the speech or presentation to be, work to communicate it conversationally.

Speaking is something you’ve done ALL your life. The only reason your conversation is inhibited in front of a crowd is because of ego. You don’t have to be a speaker, just be you. Let go of that ego.

The challenge is that most speakers are…

Desperately Seeking Acceptance.

“I hope they like me.” “I hope I do a good job.” “I hope I get good reviews.” “I hope…”

What do each of those sentences begin with?

Exactly.

That’s the problem with the average speaker (and some great professional speakers as well).

We have got to get “I” out of the way. Until we do that we will NEVER give the audience full value.

As speakers and presenters we have to do what is BEST for the audience. If you are in sales you have to do what is BEST for the client.

If you’re worried about the feedback cards or what people think, then form your own speakers club and pat each other on the back. Share warm fuzzies about how wonderful you all are.

If you want to be great, give the audience what they need (and sometimes what they deserve.)

Warm Regards,
Paul Evans

Taking a Risk: Gambling House Taking Risks

April 9th, 2009

Generally speaking a gambling house is a construction that caters to games. Here, guests may take a chance by having a bash at the one-armed-bandits or trying out a slew of other gambling games. Betting hall games in the main include methodically derived percentages constituting them which insure the gambling house maintains its leverage against the betting enthusiasts. free online casino games

A large number betting establishment games can instigate you to get overly habituated in no time. A case in hand is the standard 1-armed-bandit, a coin eating contraption with three or more cogs that whirl if a crank affixed to it is pushed. The contraption on the whole pays out correlating with an array of symbols observable on the front of the machine. Disastrously, casino games proffer the hallucination of power, effectively conning the betting aficionado – the victim is conceded alternatives, but in reality they will never realistically nix the client’s fundamental handicap. That is brought about by the the casino not returning the full sum as hoped for. This systematic pattern is recurrently found in well-known casino games such as Texas hold’em, dice, roulette or blackjack.

Five-card stud is undeniably an immensely popular casino pastime. The bettors, meticulously guarding their fully covered cards, place bets into a central pot which is then awarded to the prevailing gamester blessed with the winning hand. (Of course, the bluffer may well prevail too.) Not far removed from blind poker, blackjack is also a highly trendy casino pastime. A substantial chunk of its renown is due to its peculiar mix of chance and technique and decision making, and a praxis termed “counting”. It is a demanding strategy in which gambling fans are in a position to dramatically shift the odds of the game in their interest both by betting & procedural opetations in agreement with the hands shown.

“Craps” is yet another highly popular casino pastime where players will bet on the roll of two dice. Guests wager on the outcome of of 1 spin, or on a series of spins of 2 dice. Contrary to blackjack, there’s no available killer strategy people could apply to bend the odds.

Roulette is another incredibly popular casino based gambling pastime — a croupier twists a roulette wheel which encloses thirty seven (French roulette) or, alternatively thirty-eight (American or Vegas roulette) distinctively numbered compartments in which the ball must come to lie, thus announcing the winning number as well as the other chances that will come with it. If the punter happens to bet money on any given number and makes it so it’s their lucky day, the guaranteed repayment will be thirty five to 1, the initial pledge being tossed back. Therefore in totality it’s multiplied by a factor of thirty six.

Persist in being watchful nevertheless as a vast number of betting room betting games are generally deemed especially dependency forming. A lot of lives have been ruined by addictive gambling + even though it arguably might be entertaining, do attempt to balance yourself.

Public Speaking – How Self Hypnosis Cds Can Help

April 8th, 2009

One of the most popular issues than anyone can have is the fear of speaking in public. In fact surveys have revealed that in the US this is the biggest fear of Americans.

Public speaking as such can refer to many differing events in which a person has to speak to more than one person. So anytime someone speaks to a group of two or more people this can be considered to be public speaking. This is also when, for many people, their fear or phobia is at its worse.

Now as with any phobia or fear, there are different aspects to it for different people. One person might relish a work meeting when everyone is seated around a table but as soon as they need to stand up and address the same group of people their fear can materialise. For another person used to training groups of people, and there fore standing up in front of them, their public speaking fear might be having to give that best man’s speech.

Generally though the symptoms most often experienced by someone who has a fear of public speaking are:

1) Rapid heart beat
2) Shallow breathing
3) Dry mouth
4) Shaking hands
5) Tension in the jaw muscles
6) Loss of memory about what they wanted to say
7) Their voice becomes strained and has a higher pitch
8) Nausea
9) Wanting to run away
10) Loss of sleep

Any or all of the above can happen to a person. They may also have gone through various avoidance strategies beforehand in order to find a way out of having to speak.

Often the biggest problem is the person’s ability to think and imagine the worse possible outcome of their speech. In imagining that their speech is going to be a disaster they naturally become tense and stressed and do not have a good time.

Where a good public speaking hypnosis cd can help is in using the power of the imagination for and not against, the person. The imagination is used to see themselves succeeding and giving a great speech.

Interestingly enough, most people who do deliver their speech will get feelings of euphoria mixed with relief at the end of it. They most often feel confident and may even decide that they could do that speech again.

Here is the secret to feeling calm and relaxed with public speaking then. Using your imagination for you and not against you and practise. You more you do something, the more it becomes second nature and the more confident you will feel.

Rules for Responsible Article Creation

April 8th, 2009

These rules apply to any advertiser creating media, whether it’s articles, blog posts, or video blog entries. But I’ll write it to apply to responsible article creation for Adam Schultz, my WebSourced colleague.

For the advertiser seeking to create articles the rules are fairly simple: know your strengths and know your audience. It may help if you think of your current clients, and potential clients, as your audience. I will refer to clients as audience for the rest of this article.

Know Your Audience
In particular, know what issues plague your clients from day to day. If you sell pizza ovens then consider who’s buying your ovens. These are people who run kitchens.

Knowing this you know that they also manage employees and money. They also face market pressures such as low carb. They also have to clean their ovens, which is tough in itself.

All of these issues that the pizza joint manager faces would make great articles. Here’s a list of titles that this little brainstorm suggested to me:

How to Motivate Your Employees to Upsell Pizza Sizes
When Success Hinders Growth: Making Time To Expand Your Pizza Joint
Getting Expansion Loans for Your Pizza Business
How One Pizza Joint Rode the Low Carb Craze and Prospered
How to Make Your Pizza Ovens Sparkle Like New
10 Tips for Cleaning Burnt Cheese Off Pizza Pans Faster Than Ever Before
15 Crazy New Gourmet Pizza Recipes

Understanding your audience’s buying cycle can also help you in creating content.

Know Your Strengths
As a pizza oven seller online you might not know much about upselling from a medium pizza to a large. But you do – I promise – have some lodes of information that can apply to the pizza business. Hunting out where your experience and expertise converges with the pizza oven business is a matter of:

    a) knowing your personal strengths
    b) having conversations with your customers

Conversations with your customers will reveal many many ideas for more articles/blog posts/tools (yes tools – especially web based – are some of the strongest link builders out there… so watch for tools your audience might need.)

Develop a series of questions that will uncover the vacancies in your audience’s current media. WHAT?? I mean uncover what questions your audience/potential audience has and create media (write articles/blog posts/video blog entries) that answer these questions.

So What’s A Responsible Article?
A responsible article is one that focuses soley, completely and entirely on solving a particular problem your audience faces. This article, while intended to influence the audience by suggesting behaviors or strategies that might help them, does not seek to influence the audience in a way that will benefit your company.

An irresponsible article is one that is intended to sway the audience into an action that primarily benefits the advertiser.

So How Does this Benefit My Bottom Line?
If you’re writing responsible articles (creating responsible media… remember this applies to all advertiser created media) that aren’t intended to sway the audience into buying your products then what the hell are you doing writing articles?

You’re proving, through your free sharing of valuable information, that:

    a) you’re trustworthy
    b) you’re an industry thought leader

So how does being found a trustworthy thought leader affect your bottom line? It lays the foundation for a long and successful career, no matter what the industry.
