Query and Cover Letters: A Quick How-To

March 18th, 2009

Writing a good query or cover letter will demonstrate to an editor or publisher just how serious you are about your work and getting it published.

There is a small difference between query and cover letters. A query letter is used to show an editor that your work is different and fresh. It is an introduction of you and your writing. It is a selling tool. A cover letter is a reminder that the editor requested your work. It accompanies your piece and is essentially a revamp of your query letter. Both follow the same guidelines.

The format you should use is that of a business letter. Use a standard font size and type, such as 12 point Times New Roman. Your letter should be single spaced with double spaces between paragraphs. Leave a one-inch margin on all sides.

If possible, find out the name of the editor. Address your query or cover letter directly to them. This could keep your work out of the slush pile and it allows the editor see that you have done your research.

In the body of the letter, you should tell the editor what you are sending and, briefly, why it is different and exciting. Give a short bio, no more than four sentences. Keep in mind this is the first writing sample the editor will see! Cite any works you have published and in which publication. Let the editor know that you have clips available and give information on how they can get copies of these clips. Give the editor every possible way to contact you; address, phone number, fax, and e-mail.

Wrap up your letter with a polite closing. Don’t forget to thank the editor for considering your work!

And always, always include a SASE!

This is a very basic, but important, tool for a writer. Learn how to utilize it to your advantage.

Aberdeen Leading Europe in Office Lets

March 18th, 2009

Unlike its European counter parts the city of Aberdeen is managing to retain a high level of office rental income. Whereas other cities, like Edinburgh and Glasgow have seen a considerable down turn in this sector Aberdeen is riding high.

The rate of occupancy, in the office blocks of this oil rich Scottish city, is exceptional considering the current economic climate. Being linked to oil has meant many highs and lows in past years but even the current low value of crude oil doesn’t seem to have made much of an affect on this region of the country.

Last year’s 20% rise on office rental incomes seems set to continue and is a completely different picture from the rest of the UK. Whilst other major cities are struggling to find companies to fill their square footage Aberdeen somehow seems to have found the secret. If though on the other hand you’re looking to just rent a desk, a good place to search would be Desk Space Genie. Here you can find cheap desk space to rent at the click of a button.

Elsewhere the declining office rental market has resulted in desperate attempts to attract foreign business who are not even tempted by low rents on state of the art facilities. In fact retaining existing business is proving to be very tough indeed.

With a population of just over 200 thousand people Aberdeen is the third largest city in Scotland. It has a fast growing electronics design and development industry and this is perhaps the reason for its continued success, compared to its highland rivals. Both fishing and oil contribute to the City of Granite’s economic buoyancy.

Obviously Aberdeen can not become complacent and must be careful to maintain this positive trend; hopefully the historic city will not follow in its neighbours footsteps.

Creating Better Relationships

March 16th, 2009

The most important achievements you can ever have in this life is your own happiness.

And the majority of all the happiness you will ever have, will come from your personal relationships. Your interactions and the time you spend with the people you care about will be the major source of the pleasure, enjoyment, and satisfaction you have on a daily basis.

The key to a happy family life is communication and the amount of time you spend with the people you love. It is not the quality of time, but the quantity of time that counts. The expression “quality time” is used by people to justify and excuse the fact that their lives are so disorganized that they do not spend much time with their spouse or their children. The fact is, that quality time is a function of quantity. Quality moments are those little moments that are precious, unexpected, and important. They arise during the process of spending a large quantity of uninterrupted time with another person. You can’t dictate these moments in advance and you can’t decide to have quality time. You don’t go to it. It comes to you.

There are many ways to get the greatest amount of quality and happiness from your relationships with the members of your family. Perhaps the most important is to spend uninterrupted time with your spouse on a daily basis. You should set aside time together each night to talk after your children have gone to bed. But, it is equally important for you and your spouse to take some time every morning to communicate and interact as well.

Studies have shown that one of the most important things a man can do in a marriage is to help out with the various household and family responsibilities. Help prepare the meals, or take over the responsibility of cleaning up afterward. Help to get the children ready for school or for their activities, and take them there personally so that you can have one-on-one time with them.

One of the most important things that couples can do is to spend the first 30 to 60 minutes after work talking about how their day went. When they come home, many men have the habit of talking about their own days and then watching the television or reading the newspaper, while their wife is left to deal with the children and prepare dinner. And this inevitably causes stress and problems in the relationship.

The key to your emotional stability, and peace of mind is happiness and harmony within your family. So if you’re a man, take the time to ask your wife about her day and then listen to all the things that she has to deal with before you start talking about your day. Most men are surprised when they first do this. They find that their wife’s day has been equally as interesting as their day has been, if not far more interesting.

One of the most common problems in any relationship is stress. Stress often comes about because we think we know our spouse really well. This knowledge can become a dangerous thing. It can become a communications trap and cause a great deal of stress in a relationship. A communications trap is when we try to read our spouse’s mind and then interpret and anticipate what he or she is feeling.

For example, we will often see an expression on our spouse’s face that we think we recognize or we think we hear something in his or her voice, and then we act on what we assume he or she is thinking or feeling. But, often, these assumptions aren’t reflective of what our spouse is actually feeling. In other words, we’re acting on misinformation.

It is important in any relationship to be able to distinguish between fantasy and reality. Between what you actually see and hear, and what you imagine or assume you see and hear. Just because your spouse might have a frown on his or her face, don’t automatically assume something is wrong. He or she might just be thinking or contemplating about something. And if you keep pushing to find out what is wrong, you will often cause unnecessary stress and a problem.

If you see your spouse’s arms crossed and his or her lips curled downward don’t automatically assume they’re angry. Instead of automatically assuming your spouse is angry or upset about something and then asking what he or she is angry about. Imagine how you feel when you have your arms crossed and you lips curled down. Are you upset, angry, or just lost in thought? Think about how you would feel before you start making any assumptions.

When we first met our spouse, we loved him or her, even with all their bad habits. We overlooked the fact that he or she was sloppy or always late, and we focused on the things we loved about him or her. But now, five, ten, or twenty years later, we do the opposite. All we can see is the mess, or that our spouse is always late, or whatever the problem is. We forget, or more often take for granted all the things we loved about that person. This focus on the negative begins a vicious cycle in which we see only the negative, and then feel that’s all there is to that person, and then the relationship begins to spiral downward.

When this happens, take the time to sit quietly by yourself and remember what things were like when you first met you spouse. Remember all the things you loved. Remember the things you did together that were really fun. Ask yourself, how long has it been since you told your spouse what you appreciate about him or her. Then, after dinner and the kids have gone to bed, unplug the telephone, go to a nice relaxing place in the house, and tell your spouse what is on your list. Tell him or her some of the things you’ve been taking for granted, some of the things you’ve been overlooking in the relationship.

If you do this, and remember all the things you really love and appreciate about your spouse, and then take some time to talk to him or her about them, the results will be wonderful.

One of the keys to a happy relationship is to never make assumptions based on what you think a person’s body language is saying. Remove the mind reading and guesswork out of your communication. Don’t be a mind reader. Instead, be a curious observer.

Your children have a tremendous need to communicate with you. In fact, research has shown that the one factor that is more important than any other in the development of children is the amount of one-on-one time that parents spend with their children. When parents don’t spend a lot of time with their children individually , they send a message to their children that they are not very valuable or important. This causes children to experience feelings of inferiority, low self-esteem, and a negative self-image. And this will often lead to poor grades and behavioral problems.

When parents take the time to sit down with their children and ask questions and listen to what is going on in their minds, the children will feel a deep sense of value and importance. The children will have more self-confidence, happiness, and be better able to develop good relationships with others.

We have to remember that we are all value creators in everything we do. If you own a business, you have to create value for you employees or they will not continue to work for you. You have to continually create value for your customers or they won’t continue to do business with you. The same is true in your relationships, whether it is your spouse or a close personal friend. You have to constantly create value for the other person and satisfy their needs or they won’t stay in the relationship.

You don’t have to be superman or superwoman to properly balance the demands of your work and the needs of your family. You must, however, be more thoughtful, and be a better planner, use your time more effectively, and continually think of ways to enhance the quality of your life in both areas. If you set this as a goal and resolve to work toward it every day, you will gradually become far more efficient, effective, and a far happier person. And that is the most important achievement of all.

Drivng Home the Point – An Outsourcing Story in China

March 15th, 2009

A few years ago, I visited Beijing for the first time. At Beijing airport, I got into a taxi and paid 450 yuan (about US$54) to get to the city. I was horrified to find out later that the normal taxi fare for the same distance was 60 yuan!

The next time, I went to Suzhou from Beijing. My local friends advised me to take a plane to Shanghai airport and catch a taxi from there. They told me that the taxi fare from Shanghai airport to Suzhou should be around 400 yuan.

When I arrived at Shanghai airport, I saw a middle-aged man holding a placard, with “Suzhou, Wuxi” written on it. He wanted to charge 200 yuan for the ride.

That caught my attention! It was half the price I expected. I checked out the manhe looked pretty decent and it seemed like a good deal. And so I accepted the offer.

The journey

The man carried my luggage to his car, drove me to a nearby spot and asked me to wait. Five minutes later, he came back with another car and another driver. He explained to me that he did not have the licence to drive in Suzhou and had asked his friend to help.

Before parting, I paid him 200 yuan and confirmed with the new driver that he would take me to Suzhou. I transferred my luggage to the new car.

During the trip while chatting with the driver, I realised that he was on the way home to Wuxi, bypassing Suzhou. The man who had “contracted” him had paid him 50 yuan.

His car stopped outside the city of Suzhou. He told me that he was not familiar with the roads of Suzhou and would help me get a taxi.

Within a few minutes, he flagged down a taxi, told the taxi where I wanted to go, paid the taxi driver 10 yuan and transferred my luggage. The rest of the journey was uneventful and I arrived safely at my hotel, on time to meet my customers.

All benefit

There were three persons in this value chain. First, the man at the airport offered to meet my needs at half the normal price. He made his money by outsourcing the “production” to the Wuxi driver, who could do it at a cheaper cost. Second, the Wuxi driver “outsourced” to the Suzhou taxi driver for the same reason.

At the end, the man at the airport earned 150 yuan, while the Wuxi driver earned 40 yuan and the Suzhou taxi driver earned 10 yuan. I was the biggest winner because I saved 200 yuan!

The bottomline is companies should focus on what they are good at, and leverage on others’ strengths. But today, many companies still try to do everything themselves in-house.

For instance, IT departments within big corporations try to develop applications that are available in the marketyet non-core to their business.

Many companies also think that manpower cost is fixed, so it is better to work with existing resources than to incur additional costs in IT applications or services.

They think that manpower cost is just basic salary, and forget about the other costs such as bonus and employee benefits, as well as overheads such as recruitment and rental. They underestimate their manpower cost.

The fact is unless you understand the actual costs of a particular process or project, it is difficult to decide if outsourcing is a better alternative.

Besides costs, the question is: can you do a better job than someone who specialises in the field? Just think of the Wuxi and Suzhou taxi drivers.

Bible Study: Slaves to Jesus or Slaves to Sin

March 11th, 2009

How can I stop sinning? It seems like I am always confessing my sins and yet they never go away. What am I doing wrong? This is a really loaded question, especially since we are not perfect individuals and we are all sinners. We will always have sin in our life and we will sin. But this certainly doesn’t mean that some of us are not good people. It means that we don’t understand the logistics of sin and how it all works in our life.

There are some people who actually think they never sin. But this is not true. The idea that one does not sin is absolutely ridiculous. Even if a person were locked up in a closet unable to get out and go anywhere, he would be sinning with his thoughts! The person who thinks he does not sin would also believe then that he doesn’t have to pray, confess and repent either.

Still, there are others who continue practicing the same sin over and over and because they confess that sin over and over they think they are Christ Ones and are going to heaven. But this is not true either.

What is true is that some of us sin more than others and some of us cannot stop sinning, while others may go days without sinning. Sometimes we sin and we don’t even know that we have sinned! We are all sinners.

“If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. If we claim we have not sinned, we make him out to be a liar and his word has no place in our lives.” 1 John 1:8-10

The death of Jesus Christ doesn’t mean much to those who think they are without sin or for those who do not believe that Christ suffered and died for their sins. The false teachers of Jesus’ day were like this, they believed they were perfect. They denied that sin breaks fellowship with God. They also denied they ever sinned. But all people sin by nature and habit.

Here is a great an awesome truth about sin. When we become a NEW person in Christ by believing, confessing and repenting, all our sins will be forgiven, that includes sins of the past, present and even future sins. Because of Christ’s death even future sins are forgiven! Did you know this? Wow!

But John says that if we continue in “a” certain sin, we cannot claim to be a part of God and if we say we have no sin, we are fooling ourselves and are in great denial to the truth! God knows our heart so we cannot continue in our sin and still believe we are a part of God’s family.

Even after we become NEW people in Christ (Christ Ones) we still sin once in a while and we still need to confess those sins. But a NEW person who is in Jesus Christ and who has a change of heart is not a “slave to sin”. There is a difference.

“Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature, sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry. Because of these, the wrath of God is coming. You USED to walk in these ways, in the life you once lived. But now you must rid yourselves of all such things as these: anger, rage, malice, slander, and filthy language from your lips. Do not lie to each other, since you have taken off your old self with its practices and have put on the NEW SELF, which is being renewed in knowledge in the image of its Creator.” Colossians 3:5-10

Sometimes confessing our sins to God or to others takes humbleness and honesty on our part. We simply need to recognize our weaknesses in life and work on those areas we are the weakest in. We should never fear revealing our sins to God. When we pray to God about our sins we can do it silently in our heart, we do not have to speak out loud in front of others to be forgiven by God –He hears our heart!

The difference between a sinner who is a slave to sin and the person who sins on accident is simply this: to err is to be human, but to continue in that err is to be a slave to it. We become a slave to what has mastered us. If we cannot come out from a sin its effects are controlling us. If we are under sin we are to confess, repent, and ask for God’s forgiveness. But the person who stays in their sin is NOT a NEW person in Christ but still in bondage to that particular sin.

We should never fear telling God about our sin(s) because he already knows what we have done, good and bad. He will not push us away no matter what it is we have done. When we confess our sins to God it will ease our consciences and lighten our worries and cares.

Some New people In Jesus Christ (Christ Ones) believe the reason for confession of sins is for God’s forgiveness. This is only partially true. What would happen if we suddenly got hit by a car and died without confessing our sins to God? Would we be condemned to hell? I don’t think so. It doesn’t work like that.

When we become NEW people in Christ, he forgives us of all the sins we have ever committed and even new sins too! We don’t need to keep confessing the sins of our past either. We also do not have to fear that God will reject us if we mark our clean slate once in a while.

The New person is not a slave to sin anymore because they do not seek sin out for the purpose of its outcome. Still, we should continue to confess our sins, not because failure to do so will alter our salvation but so we can enjoy the most from our personal relationship with Jesus Christ. The New person is now a slave to Jesus Christ and his righteousness.

“What then? Shall we sin because we are not under law but under grace? By no means! Don’t you know that when you offer yourselves to someone to obey him as slaves, you are slaves to the one whom you obey – whether you are slaves to sin, which leads to death, or to obedience, which leads to righteousness? But thanks be to God that, though you used to be slaves to sin, you wholeheartedly obeyed the form of teaching to which you were entrusted. You have been set free from sin and have become slaves to righteousness”. Romans 6:15-18

True confession involves a commitment not to continue in sin. We certainly would not be genuinely confessing our sins if we intended on committing those same sins again, would we?

Bottom line is every person has a master – either God or sin. A Christ One is not someone who cannot sin, but someone who is no longer a slave to sin because he or she belongs to God (Jesus Christ). They are dead to sin, alive in Jesus Christ.

Who is your master? …For a man is a slave to whatever has mastered him. 2 Peter 2:19

Better Spring Break Body – 5 tips to a Leaner You

March 10th, 2009

Everyone on campuses all over are talking about exotic places like Daytona Beach, Mexico, Bahamas, and Hawaii, so I must guess that saying Spring Break is on our minds would be an understatement. There is something all these places have in common: the beautiful beaches and the hot bodies we are going to see on them. Do you have your hot bod ready to catch some sun when spring break rolls around? Here are five quick tips you can implement right now to get you closer to a Spring Break Hot Bod.

Problem Areas Solved
To help fine-tune specific body parts, your workouts are going to have to be more frequent. The best way to get this done is to break your day into two halves. In the morning, perform a quick 15-20 minute workout involving weights done in a circuit. By circuit I mean doing one exercise after another without any rest. In the afternoon, get into classes such as kickboxing and spinning, which Campus Activities provide for all students.

Carbohydrates: Friend or Foe
Carbohydrates are not the enemy, but when you are looking to get leaner quickly, they can be. The best suggestions are that all your carbs should come from veggies such as broccoli, celery, spinach, lettuce, and cucumbers. Stay away from juices, candies, breads, and pastries.

Protein is your friend
Make sure every single time you are eating, you have protein on your plate. Protein can be egg whites, peanuts, chicken, fish, turkey, or low salt ham. Whenever you are eating, make sure that you have one of those things in your plate. Also make sure you are consuming five to six small meals as well.

Drinking
If you are not drinking, you are not losing. It is important that you are drinking all day long, and I do not mean liquor. You should be drinking water all the time. A good way to measure if you are is by looking at the color of your urine. If your urine is not crystal clear then get your Poland Spring on!Drinking water helps in shedding weight, which is why if you are not drinking, then you are not losing.

Perform exercises that give you the best bang for your buck
With midterms coming there is no time to waste when you go to the gym. Perform workouts that can be done in a short, quick fashion and give you great results. Perform exercises like squats, pushups, lunges, shoulder presses and deadlifts. Do not waste your time on the hip machines because you will be sitting there forever before you really see the results you want.

So what are you waiting for? Do not just read these tips; it is time to implement them. For some there are less than four weeks to get your body ready for spring break. Take action right now and I promise you will not regret that you did.

Geovanni Derice is the founder of 4everToned, which is a home based personal training business in Brooklyn, New York. During his stint as a certified personal trainer, Derice has helped many frustrated men and women achieve bodies they only dreamed of until 4everToned. How To Shop Safely Online For Any Occasions

March 9th, 2009

Here are several things to keep in mind when shopping online for any special occasions.

Pay with a Credit Card and Protect Your Passwords: Credit cards offer you the most protection as a consumer. Never send cash! If you pay by credit card, your transaction is protected by the Fair Credit Billing Act. This limits your liability for any unauthorized charges
to only $50.

Understand the Return Policy: Determine the companys refund and return policies before you place any order. Generally, any item that has been engraved or personalized in any way, will not qualify for the stores Return Policy. Some countries don’t have the same return policies as we do here in North America, so know where you shop and always read their return policy if has any.

Shop with Security: When online, look for a symbol of an unbroken key or padlock of the bottom of your Web browser window to ensure that your transmission is protected. Always enter the url manually to your browser instead of clicking links thru emails messages to ensure maximum security.

Print all Transaction Records: Make sure to print or save electronically any records related to your online transactions. This will help you keep track of shipping dates, shipping and handling fees, and other details of your transaction. Take as much info as possible including names, their title and phone numbers in case of
disputes.

File a Complaint
If you suspect the business may have broken the law, file a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission. You can call the FTC toll-free at 1-877-FTC-HELP (1-877-382-4357) or file a complaint online at www.ftc.gov. or report it to your local Better Business Bureau.

Check the Sites Privacy Policy: The companys privacy policy should let you know what personal information the company is collecting, why, and how the information is going to be used. Be cautious if you’re asked to supply personal information, such as your Social Security number or personal bank account information to conduct a transaction. When you shop online, you should never ever have to provide any sensitive information such as your Social Security Number, if they do, shop somewhere else.

W Edwards Deming

March 8th, 2009

Immediately post second world war W Edwards Deming went to Japan to create order from the crisis that was the Japanese economy.

In Japan he found fertile ground for a set of ideas that had been around since the twenties.

“Quality doesn’t cost, It pays”

What Deming taught the Japanese was largely common sense.

1. Make sure that people can take pride in what they do.

2. Make sure that you use the intelligence of the workforce.

3. Treat them like human beings.

By using a set of basic principles Deming began through his teaching to build quality into Japanese industry instead of having it as a post production bolt on. Deming was hugely influential in Japan but largely ignored in America until the airing of a TV programme in the 1980’s called “If Japan can, why can’t we?”

As he said in 1992, America was in more trouble than Japan had been at the end of the war because at least Japan had known how much trouble it was in, America did not.

Deming’s teachings began to gain credibility in Europe not only for their common sense but for the demonstrable history of achievement that he brought from Japan.

Deming died in 1993 a disappointed man.
He thought his teachings would be a virus that would take off on their own.
He was frustrated that industry in Europe and North America was still largely ignoring what he knew to be true in their pursuit of traditional control and individual status.

In the UK today there is centred in Ampthill, Bedfordshire a forum called the Deming Forum.
The locus is a group dedicated to the preservation of the Deming Legacy and the continued implementation of his ideas.

The forum use the same language that we have now become accustomed to.

“Deming feels instinctively right”

“You cannot change people but people can choose to change”

“Human capital is the most important capital”

“3% of problems have figures, 97% do not. It is people who count not the figures”

“Explain Gently”

“Everyone is a leader”

“Remove the barriers that stop people from being as good as they can be”

“Get rid of the Slogans”

Deming espouses a different way of working that is about people and developing people.

It is about understanding the relationships between the soft issues and the hard facts to transform the way that a business is run.

It is about reaping the huge financial and personal benefits when we give people the respect and support that as valuable individuals each member of the workforce deserves.

Remove the fear and measure the number of smiles on Monday morning.

Games Gambling Maniacs Enjoy Contesting: Introduction to Gambling House Taking a Chance

March 7th, 2009

Assuming you don’t understand gambling saloon card playing, you’ll find more about that here… Typically, a betting saloon is a house that focuses on games of chance. Clients are expected to relax by having a bash at one-armed-bandits or trying out another gambling games. Gambling house games as a rule have fully transparent probabilities incorporated that maintain that the saloon keeps up a leverage against the patrons.

Rather a lot of betting room games can make you end up hooked very swiftly. Consider the the notorious 1-armed bandit, an electronic contraption with three plus reels which swivel if an arm coupled to it is manipulated. This instrument typically pays according to a combination of emblems shown on the lit panel of the instrument. Unfortunately, gambling saloon games will convey a fantasy of staying in control, effectively conning the gaming fan: the participant is handed choice, but in actual fact these can not truly level the patron’s longterm handicap. This is caused by the the gaming hall never repaying the full amount as expected. This mode is often noticeable in acclaimed casino games such as poker, craps, roulette or blackjack.

Seven-card stud is undeniably a highly popular casino pastime. The gambling buffs, studiously guarding their fully screened hands, are betting into a pot in the center that is given to the last player carrying the best set of cards.
