Why Do We Celebrate Fun Birthdays?

June 19th, 2008

Apart from the obvious answer about why we celebrate fun birthdays… have you ever stopped to think about this age-old tradition?

Birthdays date way back in history to a time when people originally feared evil spirits. These evil spirits were thought to be more active on the day of your birth. Family and friends would gather in a circle around the birthday person and would chant and sing bringing them nothing but good thoughts. The giving of gifts was another to bring even more cheer and goodwill to ward off the evil spirits.

Noisemakers were also thought to have been used at these parties as another way of scaring evil spirits away. Torches or candles would be lit believing they were sending a prayer to the gods and when the candles were blown out it was thought that the smoke carried these prayers or wishes into the heavens, where they thought the gods lived, so they would be granted.

Looking back through history the only documented birthdays recorded are of kings and other noble dignitaries. The poorer people and especially children did not celebrate at all. Historians have explained this, as only nobility was wealthy enough to be able to afford such an extravagance as a party.

It is the Germans who have been given credit for starting to celebrate children’s birthdays. These celebrations were originally called “kinderfeste” meaning children’s festival.

A song called “Good Morning To You” written by Mildred and Patti in 1893 was almost totally overlooked until some one changed the words to “Happy Birthday To You”. This little song is now sung in almost every home somewhere in the world at least once a year.

In today’s society, fun birthdays are eagerly awaited by the young and older generation. It is a celebration that is now an occasion, not only enjoyed by family members but friends as well.

Nowadays parties tend to have a theme attached. They may follow the lines of a character in history, a children’s comic or cartoon character, a picnic in the park or just a an outing to the zoo.

Giving presents to the birthday boy or girl is still a tradition. However, in later years it has also been a tradition to give a small gift known as party favors, to every party guest as they leave. They usually consist of a few sweets and a small gift wrapped up in a themed bag or a container that may have been used for the party itself.

So next time it’s your birthday, you’ll know why your celebrating it!!!

Be Amazed By the Amazing Windsor Castle

June 18th, 2008

Windsor Castle is considered to be the largest colonised castles around right now & the oldest in nonstop occupation (about nine hundred years). It’s 1 of Queen Elizabeth’s three royal homes, and is tine & time again alleged to be easily her most liked home. The Royal colours flies above the Round Tower of Windsor Castle as soon as Queen Elizabeth 2 is in residence – though, at alternative times, the Union Jack flag flutters as normal.

Samuel Pepys once remarked the Castle to be “the most romantic castle in the world.” That was in sixteen-sixty-six and the same is true even now.

Windsor Castle Remarkable History:

The beginning of Windsor can be found lying in the 7th century Saxon settlement of Windlesora, where the existing day community of Old Windsor can be found. The town of Windsor is normally recognised as “New Windsor” – the actual word “new” being referenced in a loose way! Windsor Castle UK tickets can be purchased via Enjoy England, The official website for tourism in England.

Windsor Castle at the start was put together by William the Conqueror, owing to his assault of England in ten-sixty-six. The original frame was assembled from lumber with gravel walls. The Castle held an understandable tactical position on a steep mound just above the River Thames, and was part of a ring of palaces around London, with the Tower of London, one day’s trip away, at its heart.

The Castle was later re-erected in rock, and increased in significance over the subsequent years. Henry 2nd put up the Round Tower & the original stone outer wall. Following the English Civil War, the building’s chief function became that of a royal house. Windsor Castle has stayed significantly unbothered since the start of the nineteenth century, apart from the repair job right after the tragic fire in 1992.

How Would You Like to Know What to Watch TV On?

June 17th, 2008

Plasma Displays are becoming very popular as improved display technology is needed to take advantage of broadband networks and Hi-definition broadcast format.

Plasma is essentially an ionised gas.
The inert or non-reactive gases such as argon or neon are used in displays.

When an electric current is applied to an inert gas, photons that produce ultraviolet light are released.

The photons, then interact with red, green or blue phosphors, or the combination to produce visible light in each of the hundreds of thousands of pixels. The intensity and brightness of the light is adjusted by the pulse of the current applied.

Much like a combination of flourescent and neon lighting.

The number pixels determines the resolution,The greater the number of pixels, the higher resolution, and each pixel is activated in this manner,

As each pixel is indivually activated, there are no visible
scan lines, and a smooth evenly lit image across
display surface is created.

There may be a couple of drawbacks to plasma, such as burn-in,
which happens when a still image is shown for so long that a “ghost” image appears to remain on the screen.

Manufacturers are now adding screensavers and other technologies to prevent burn-in.

Another disadvantage that is being improved is the lifespan in viewing hours, before dimming to half brightness. Typically, plasmas would last for around 30000 hours, though this number varies among manufacturers and is steadily improving.

Plasmas are gaining in popularity, and is expected to account for 41 percent of the large screen display market, which is
expected to grow to $5.5 billion by 2007.
Expected revenues are expected to be around $2.27 billion.
The competition among manufacturers appears be heading in the
direction of who can produce the largest as Samsung SDI has
developed what it claims is the world’s largest PDP
(plasma display panel), measuring 102 inches diagonally.

It may be that technological improvements may not be as
cost effective when compared with other technologies such as
LCD’s. A great disadvantage is power consumption, and PDP’s should be professionally installed due to their fragile nature.

Because of the wide viewing 160 angle, that is presented, plasmas are best viewed when installed on a wall.

Since each pixel is individually lit, the opportunity for light and dark areas is greatly reduced and higher contrast ratios, which is the measure of the blackest black compared to the whitest white, can be achieved.
While this can limit a plasma’s gray scaling, it does produce
darker blacks.

The jury is still out on whether the problems facing plasma technology, such as lifespan and power consumption
can be overcome and other technologies are to become more cost effective.
The technology may have reached it cost effective limit, as some maufacturers are discontinuing production beyond 2007.

These factors should be taken into consideration, when making a purchasing decision.

When Shopping for Health Insurance

June 16th, 2008

If you are going to be looking at, and deciding which health insurance is right for you, you should have some health insurance education. Look on the internet and see what kinds of different health insurance is available in your area. If you are needing insurance for a certain condition, be sure that you check and see if there are exclusions that would make the health insurance be not what you need at all.

You need to be somewhat informed on the way health insurance works before you go out and sign up for a health insurance policy. Otherwise, you might end up wasting your money.

When I was only around 20 years old, I was working for a temporary agency and was not sure what kind of job I wanted to do on a permanent basis. Eventually, I was placed in an insurance claims processing company and really enjoyed my time there. I received great health insurance education, which I still use to this day.

I processed claims on both medical and dental policies, and that knowledge has helped me later in life to know how insurance works and how to shop for health insurance when I needed to do so. I am glad I got educated about something so important while I was young.

Car Wash

June 14th, 2008

Everybody likes their car to be as good as new! That’s why car washes have sprung up like mushrooms in all parts of the country and have developed from traditional car wash methods to sophisticated pressure jet washes, where you clean your car without getting your hands wet!

Experts in the business have developed car wash technology as a replacement for the previously tedious maintenance work for automobiles. Professional car washing has a number of advantages over washing your car at home. Apart from addressing environmental concerns by using biodegradable raw materials and recycling waste water, professional car washes give a fine coat of wax and polish that give a superb finish to your car, thus increasing the resale value.

Professional car washes come in two types: soft cloth and touch free. The touch-free car wash uses high-pressure jet pumps that spray water, soap and foamers on to the vehicles, and cleans your car using a completely automated system. The soft-cloth or cloth-friction car washes obviously move soft cloth against the surface of the car and clean it using soap and water.

If you intend to start a car wash business, you need to do thorough groundwork and analyze various aspects in order to make your business profitable. Choosing the right equipment, system, and employees, of course, is always important in any business venture But apart from that, the area for your business has to be carefully selected, the type of system has to be determined after taking into consideration the living standards of the people in that area, and an easy and suitable location has to be selected to ensure good customer satisfaction. Running a car wash business requires careful daily planning to make profits. As people prefer getting their cars washes at a low price, the revenue per car decreases considerably. Also, rain and bad weather results in a shortage of clientele as consumers believe that cars will be dirty anyway for as long as the bad weather lasts.

Car Wash provides detailed information on Car Wash, Car Wash Equipment, Hand Car Wash, Waterless Car Wash and more. Car Wash is affiliated with Powder Coating Ovens.

Scientific Snake Oil

June 14th, 2008

Governments around the world have bowed before the science gods. If a thing is scientific and scientifically proven in short term testing, it is good. It is to be approved for human use. If scientists cannot discover the cause of disease and aging, they can treat the effects. If one hundred people respond well to their medicine and gladly pay the purchase price, they’ll sell it to millions. If one, two or ten of the one hundred develop other illnesses from the same medicine, the good outweighs the bad. The marketers get rich and the scientists keep their jobs. Too bad about the one or ten.

No one on earth is suffering from drug deficiency disease, yet American television advertising would have us believe we are all suffering from drug deficiency diseases. As physically ill as the American people are in general, the mind – body connection is marginalized by the science gods and mental illness wins elections.

We understand that scientists are as a rule, better educated than most of their potential victims, so we leave the heavy thinking to them and hope for the best. We hear that nuclear reactors can be much better constructed today than thirty years ago, which is to say, however good science is at any given point, there is always room for improvement and time provides it. This is also to say at any given time, any science is far from perfect and no one reasonably expects perfection in anything man made.

The fact is, most scientists are hirelings, paid to produce some profitable result for some corporate employer. As we can see from the current drug company scandals, which are but the tip of the iceberg compared to the revelations of the next few years, customers are guinea pigs and victims who bought the magic buzz words, scientifically proven.

How many people are killed and injured each year by standard medical practice? Nobody knows and very few care. We just point to average lifespan increase with no reference to quality issues and say, science good. We can decide to risk the side effects of any given medicine for the promised benefits. If we don’t get the benefit, we change the dose, switch brands or try an entirely different one. Often we get the benefit and one or more side effects. If because we are not the typical patient and our side effect is not one of those listed on the packaging, we may be prescribed yet another medicine to deal with that side effect. If that produces a bad result because no one is sure what the combination might produce, how much damage have we already done to our natural body chemistry? No point asking your doctor. He probably knows less than you because the whole thing is your experience, not his.

The world could have had automobiles that achieved over two hundred miles per gallon fifty years ago and cars that ran on water and went even further on a gallon. But all that is garage and basement science so it is suppressed for the sake of Big Oil, Big Energy, Big Banking and Big Government profits. For fifty years we have been pouring 95% of our fuel purchases into our atmosphere. If science is wonderful, it is also selective and must first answer the question, who benefits? This is the non scientific, critical question that is asked in all marketing and political decisions that drive modern science.

Many of us have been in work situations where we find a worker dedicated to doing less to earn his pay than any other worker. Such is the work ethic of most commercial science. Scientists are rightly evolutionists on the whole. They labor long hours and years for incremental, evolutionary changes. If one of their associates develops a revolutionary solution to a problem, he is shunned and his work suppressed. Perhaps the best example of this is the late Nineteenth and early Twentieth Century inventor, Nikola Tesla. Nikola would have a vision of some practical device, build it, test it, then do the drawings for the patent application. At the same time, Thomas Edison would be working many months, 18-20 hours a day, inventing an electric light bulb by trial and error. Edison died a rich man. Tesla died a pauper and most of his best inventions never came to market. Scientific evolution has proved profitable for more than a century and revolution has been suppressed by those who would suffer economic losses or smaller profits. There are many more such examples from the Twentieth Century.

The great, revolutionary science is worked out in basements and garages around the world. No financing, no encouragement and no marketing. In the well funded private, corporate and university labs, evolutionary, incremental change is the unwritten rule.

And what is the promise of science that we should bow and worship at its altar? It is more and better for less. What if we suddenly decided to settle for less and better for less? Could commercial science provide, or would that be too revolutionary? A peddler goes from town to town selling snake oil. Many gather, some buy and the guardians of public welfare urge him to move along. Another peddler comes along selling snake oil in a white lab coat and the guardians of public welfare rent him an office. Go figure.

Twelve Tips To Connect With Teachers At Conference Time

June 12th, 2008

It’s that time again! Parent-teacher conferences are coming. Are you nervous? Excited? Confused? It takes teamwork to raise kids. Teachers are part of the team, but sometimes it feels like you’re on opposite sides of the fence. Connecting with teachers can help bring out the best in your kids. Here are twelve tips to make conference time a productive, team building experience.

1. Talk with your child before conferences. Ask: “What’s the best thing and worst thing about school for you right now?” “What would be most helpful for me to know before meeting your teacher?” “How are you feeling about school, and what are you needing?” Listen more than you talk to draw out their thoughts.

2. Identify feelings and needs. Look at the situation with empathy for everyone’s needs, (your child’s, the teacher’s, and your own.) This puts you in a better position to engage cooperation from all parties.

3. Be on time and end on time. You may want to linger to bask in the glory of your child’s accomplishments, or stay to find resolution to additional issues. Rather than creating tension for the teacher and waiting parents, set up a follow-up phone call or meeting.

4. Solve problems by focusing on solutions. If you’re dealing with an ongoing problem, follow these steps: a. Listen to the teachers concerns. b. Talk about your concerns. c. Together, come up with a list of ideas that would help to solve the problem. d. Agree on a plan of action. e. Set a specific date to evaluate progress or adjust the plan. If possible, include your child in the problem solving session. Kids enjoy following through on plans they help put in place.

5. Make specific requests, such as, “Would you be willing to move Ella’s seat to the front row, so she can see the board more clearly?” It’s easier for a teacher to be helpful, when you are specific about your child’s needs. If your request is declined, discuss what other ways your child’s needs can be met. The best solutions aren’t always the first ones we come up with.

6. Communicate with respect to gain respect. Suppose you are angry over a teacher’s actions. If you begin accusing, forcing, and condemning, you may or may not bully the teacher into complying, but you’ve lost either way. Be assertive, not aggressive. Instead of attacking the teacher, attack the problem. A mom shared this story with me. She said, “Ben’s teacher made comments in front of the class, about his forgetfulness, including calling him ‘the absentminded professor.’ Ben was embarrassed and felt worse about himself and his ability to remember things every time she did it. At conferences I described the problem without attacking the teacher. I was relieved to see how eager his teacher was to be helpful. She even thanked me for bringing it to her attention. A few days later, Ben thanked me, saying things had gotten a lot better at school since conferences.”

7. Take notes. Conferences can be frantic, especially in the higher grades when you meet with multiple teachers. It can be hard to keep it all straight. Jot down teacher contact information, and any suggestions.

8. Check your self esteem at the door. I waited in line to talk with my son’s high school math teacher who said, “You son is a stellar student. That’s all I have to say.” I floated away from his table on a cloud. Next, I met the science teacher. She said, “Your son is disorganized, constantly late for class and behind in his project.” I went from floating to sinking. I had to remind myself, “This isn’t about me. It’s about being helpful to my child.” Keep your self-esteem high by not linking it to your child’s performance.

9. Don’t spiral down the tunnel of negativity. You’ll suck the teacher down with you and your child will suffer. When you sit down at conferences, resist the urge to purge your complaints about your kid’s poor manners and messy bedroom. Give the teacher insights into your child’s passions or interests. What you focus on grows. While you need to be aware of negative behaviors, your energy is best spent focusing on what your child is doing right. Inspire faith, possibility, and the potential for growth. Improvement is a process. It doesn’t happen all at once. Instead of expecting perfection, point your child in a positive direction, by focusing on what’s going right. Encourage your child’s teacher to do the same.

10. Teachers are people. When my youngest was in first grade, he used to think his teachers lived at the school. He thought their bedrooms were in the teacher’s lounge. Sometimes parents also forget that teachers are real people, with their own personalities, temperaments and styles. Rather than criticizing one teacher for being less spontaneous or more reserved, than another, consider the value your child gains from learning to interact with each teacher’s unique qualities. Look for the best in what a teacher has to offer, and you’ll find it.

11. End the meeting by summing up what was said. Include any specific action steps you’ve agreed upon, and confirm any follow up that may be needed. Clarity relieves confusion.

12. Give appreciation. Teaching is a challenging job. After conferences write a letter or email specifically describing what you appreciate about the teacher. Your positive feedback is energizing and sets the tone for a more positive educational experience for your kids.

How to Copy iPod Music and Video to a New Computer

June 11th, 2008

There are not many negatives to the Apple iPod, only one complaint often is oftentimes cited by iPod users is the lack of ability to copy iPod files from their iPod to a different machine. Even though the iPod has no issues transferring music from your computer to iPod utilising iTunes, the contrary is forbidden. If you don’t use iPod Copy Software System, you will be unable to copy your iPod files to an additional computer. This subject often occurs when iPod users get a new machine or have to install the OS on their existing personal computer. Apple prohibits this process because it does not want unauthorized sharing of bought files from the iTunes shop. Nevertheless, there are many reasonable scenarios that people call for the ability to move from iPod to machine. If a PC goes down and you need to install Windows, you could need iPod to PC transfer software to get your worthful files. Differently, the clean installment of iTunes will delete your iPod, possibly costing you thousands of dollars in deleted data. Yet another common scenario customers need these types of software is when they purchase a new personal computer and need to move their existing database of iPod music on the new personal computer. Once Again, if you don’t have this type of computer program, you could possibly lose your worthful iPod music and video files. There are hundreds companies that offer up computer programs to achieve this chore. A fast visit to CNET or Tucows will show a bunch of alternatives. You might also just key the phrase ‘iPod to machine transfer software’ into your favorite search engine.
